The
major sites affected in Kolkata are lung (16.3%), mouth (7.1%),
larynx (5.9 %), pharynx (5.7%), liver (4.8%), and stomach (4.6%)
in males and breast (22.7%), cervix (17.5 %), gall bladder (6.4%),
ovary ( 5.8%), lung (3.9%). Recent unpublished data has indicated
a slight shift to the above demography and also a lowering of cancer
incidence in Kolkata but the trend towards a greater incidence of
breast cancer and gall bladder cancer in females and lung and prostate
cancer in males is maintained. |
| |
| |
We
do not have detailed and reliable data from the districts of West
Bengal as yet, but the incidence rate should be similar to the rate
seen in Barshi, which is a rural area. In districts, the incidence
of uterine cervical cancer is higher than breast cancer in females
and oral cavity cancer in males, particularly in the coastal area
of Midnpore. |

| Facilities |

| |
Diagnosis |
| |
| |
Diagnostic
facilities for initial diagnosis and staging are available in most
of the district towns and some sub divisional towns through out
West Bengal. Sophisticated techniques that use nuclear medicine
are available at present only in Kolkata. For more advanced biochemical
testing some institutions in Kolkata work in tandem with bigger
institutions in Delhi and Mumbai to get their samples tested. |

To
counter nausea, use antiemetics liberally. If you are in a hospital
ward, avoid watching other patients when they vomit. That itself
might trigger nausea and vomiting. Nausea and loss of appetite are
common symptoms but they should go away once the treatment is stopped.
Should they persist, consult your doctor. |
